Tuesday Teal

I was so frustrated with my inability to accurately photograph my manicure yesterday (Wet n Wild Buffy the Violet Slayer) that I didn't blog.  It was a standard day, so nothing big there.  All of my photos were way too blue.  I've included one below, but it's a vibrant violet that actually caused a male classmate to comment on it.

Today was another semi-boring (aka normal) day.  We had Path at 8 am followed by two hours of Perio.  After lunch we had Hematology with a guest lecturer.  I really liked the guest lecturer's style, so that was nice.  GBB picked me up (we carpool) and we headed home to take a nap.  Our nap went slightly long, and I refused to wake up for about a half hour.  Persistence paid off, and I woke up and made pancakes for brinner!  (YUM!)

We're planning on going to bed early.  I have my first Complete Denture lab tomorrow morning, so I'm interested and excited about that.

The manicure today was a teal masterpiece.  I painted all fingers except my ring fingers with China Glaze Shower Together (which is, incidentally, very close to the color I painted our bedroom!) and slapped on a base coat of CG For Audrey.   I then put on striping tape that I just got from eBay for a couple dollars shipped and coated my fingernails with Shower Together.  I learned my lesson that each piece of tape has to be removed individually.  I got in a hurry with my right hand and pulled two pieces off together.  Luckily for me it wasn't so botched I had to restart.  Check it out!

Dusty Hunting!

Today is my first Saturday of D2!  GBB and I went out for breakfast.  We love to eat breakfast at least one morning each weekend because there are great Mom & Pop breakfast restaurants around where we live.  He got chicken & waffles, and I got one Nutella crepe with bananas and an order of toast.  It was super amazing as always.

After we ate, I asked if I could go dusty hunting, which is going to nail salons and other stores that have nail polish to purchase bottles that may be harder to find on the internet or in retail stores.  GBB, having no idea what I was talking about, just looked at me like I was stupid.  Once I explained it, he semi-groaned and told me that would be awkward but agreed to go.  After a single shop, he was diving in before I could!  I explained that he was looking for China Glazes and OPIs with silver caps because I was looking for CG Kaleidoscope/OMG and OPI DS.  I would say we pretty much hit paydirt.  I told him I'd seen online some people say it's about 1 in 4 shops that have good polishes.  I think we went 3/5 or something similar.  In two hours, we got the following:
  • 2 OPI DS Coronation (new)
  • 2 OPI DS Original (75% and 60%)
  • OPI DS Diamond (80%)
  • OPI Sparkle-icious (85%)
  • CG Tickle My Triangle (90%)
  • CG 2NITE (25%)
  • CG LOL (70%)
  • CG IDK (70%)
  • CG BFF (80%)
  • CG GR8 (new)

I really need to find a better way to estimate how much polish is left, so please let me know if you have a method!  It's difficult because the bottles aren't cylinders.  I have an idea about how to do it scientifically, but that'll have to wait.  =)

I paid about $60 total, which I think is pretty good.

Keep your pearly whites pearly white!

It's Friday, Friday!

I guessed correctly.  Over break, I realized that I only had one more Friday without hearing that annoying Rebecca Black song until Thanksgiving break.  For some reason, it became an in-joke with the class to the point where I'd hear it on the order of 10-20 times a week.  Today, the first Friday of D2, didn't disappoint. There was plenty of "Friday" action.

We had a Perio quiz at 8 am.  It was a 10 question quiz worth 10% of our final grade, so you can do the math.  I think it went well, mostly because it was very similar to previous quizzes.  We then had a lecture for Perio that mostly consisted of the prof making jokes.  Somehow we ended up with a generous, three hour break, so my buddy and I went for a nice walk.  We saw turtles, fish, and a ton of Peanuts!  (A friend once told me she calls all toddlers 'Peanuts' because they have huge heads like the cartoon characters.  It stuck.)  The Peanuts were taking a walk and generally being adorable by holding hands with their assigned buddy. One Peanut said hi to my friend and me, and upon receiving an enthusiastic reply, the dam broke.  Every single Peanut insisted on saying hi on their way through.  Super adorable.  After lunch was Hematology.  I really like the man who is currently teaching, so this wasn't too bad.  Finally, we had an hour of Diversity Education, which was basically a stand-up comedy session with a little controversy added in.  Suffice it to say that a classmate stuck his foot in his mouth.

GBB and I then had a super yummy dinner of Cajun/Creole food and watched Harry Potter (7-1) in preparation for tomorrow's HP 7-2 screening.  We decided to pre-order tickets for Saturday so that we would (hopefully) miss the crazies.  =)  Now it's beddy-bye!  We're basically grandparents, we're so boring.  I honestly prefer it that way, though.

Today's nails were a half-moon manicure featuring yesterday's Color Club Revvvolution for the half-moons and Color Club Worth the Risque for the rest.  I thought this was a nice (quick) way to spice up a perfectly good manicure instead of removing it all.  I was very pleased with this manicure except that I've got quite a way to go with technique.  For my first try, however, I think it's acceptable.  I used paper hole protectors for a guide.  Let me know if you have any tips or tricks!

A tooth brushing (or three!) a day keeps the periodontist away,

Almost Friday!

I managed to forget about blogging, but I'm counting this one as being on time for Thursday because it's not yet Friday in most of the USA.  =)

Today was pretty standard.  We had our 8 am class (Hematology) and it wasn't bad.  We learned about hemophilia, which was confusing/counterintuitive at first but interesting.  Then we had a Perio lecture.  Our quiz is tomorrow, and I'm feeling decent about it.  I didn't do much preparation because a. the previous years' quizzes (up to a few years back) were almost exactly the same and b. most of the information at this point is really intuitive.  I guess I'll know in a few hours how it went!

I decided to paint my nails with Color Club Revvvolution.  It is a really nice, black/charcoal holographic polish!  I was shocked and pleased to find that it applied evenly and became opaque after ONE coat.  That, along with its lack of bald spots, is nearly unheard of for a holographic polish.  Needless to say, I'm pleased.  My best guy friend from school remarked that it reminded him of the sparkly paint on a bass fishing boat.  Since I've literally never touched a worm in my life, I'll take him at his word and also convince myself that was a compliment.  =)  I wasn't able to get a sunlight picture to capture it in its sparkly glory, but I used the flash to fake it.

Pink Wednesday

Today was rather uneventful.  We had our first Complete Denture class today at 8 am followed by instrument check-in down in the lab.  That's where we get our roughly $7k of instruments that we purchased for the year.  It's amazing how compact $7k of instruments can be!  After lunch was Path.  AGAIN the prof beat the dead horse that is reading the book.  AGAIN she blatantly said she thinks we'd fail if we read the second edition instead of the third.  Seeing as I haven't actually completed a reading assignment in...ever... we'll see how this goes.

After class ended at 2 pm, I spent an hour or so downloading fonts and formatting my own day planner.  I spent hours in stores and on the internet trying to find a planner that suited me and never could, so I decided I'd make my own.  Hopefully I'll have pictures soon.  I spent the evening picking up the apartment and managed to put together a DVD rack/shelf from Target in 26 minutes!  I was pleased with myself.  =)

In honor of Mean Girls, today's manicure was pink.  I used Color Club's Jackie Oh!  It is an eye-searing neon pink that looks like it was extracted from radioactive highlighters.  I spent a lot of time trying to accurately represent the color in photos, but it's impossible.  If you don't own it, trust me that it is BRIGHT.  Take a peek!

D2 Day 2

I survived the second day!  I had three classes/four lecturers today.  We started out with Path, where the professor basically told us not only that she wants us to read the 80+ page reading assignment for each class before and immediately after class plus again before the exam, but that she thinks we'll fail if we use an earlier edition of the book.  I'm pretty sure most of the class was staring at her with gaping mouths because nobody planned on even buying a book.  Curveball.  We then had a two hour Perio lecture that was surprisingly interesting and well-presented.  After lunchtime with a friend, we had Hematology.  Since we're a captive audience, they decided to increase the lecture time from one to two hours today.  That was pretty rough, but we all made it (thanks, in large part, to Facebook).

Tonight, GBB and I watched the sixth Harry Potter movie.  I've read all of the books, but GBB has not, so we're watching the movies before the last one is released this weekend.  I probably should have started studying, but I'm still not really in school mode.  I hope that kicks in tomorrow.

On the horizon for the week is a Perio quiz (worth 10% of the final grade) on Friday morning, a "family" cookout for all dental school students, the Harry Potter release, and the Cuspid Crawl.  The Cuspid Crawl is an annual bar crawl for dental students.  I didn't take part last year, but I may show up this year to hang out with friends.

My fingernails, unfortunately, didn't change.  I've been painting them about an hour before bed and didn't really feel like doing the whole process again last night.  I'm naked-nailed at the moment, so expect a new manicure tomorrow!  =)  I am proud of myself, though, because my scrubs (as seen in the photo) are blue.  I gained weight last year during school because I'm a yo-yo and had to wear black "fat scrubs" until today.  I'm still ready to lose about 20-30 more pounds, but I'm happy to be back in blue.  I also have the best friends in the world, both of whom noticed the blue scrubs.  That makes a girl feel good!

Dental/Fingernail Tip:  denture brushes make great fingernail brushes.  The bristles are very firm, and the handle aids with maneuverability.  I found this out after I got multiple samples of denture brushes at a meeting.  As a 23 year old girl, I'm hoping I'll never have an actual need for them!

I hope you have a wonderful day/night!

First Day of D2!

I had great aspirations of posting a long, beautifully written, incredibly informative first post.  However, in typical fashion, I put off writing my first post until 10 pm on a Monday after my first day back at dental school since June 3. You may have to deal with a long, poorly written, barely informative first post.  Lo siento.

For those who don't know me, I am now 25% of a dentist!  I started my second year of dental school this morning at 8 am.  I'm currently obsessed with nail polish, having increased my collection fairly exponentially over my short break.  Nail polish is a great outlet for me because it helps improve my manual dexterity (especially in my non-dominant hand)  as well as stimulating my little OCD mind.  (More on the OCD at a later point, I'm sure.)  There is something that is incredibly soothing to me about grouping polishes into color categories, creating gradients, and ordering the polishes in a storage container.

My first day back was a typical first day consisting of a few different orientation/welcome back sessions, plus two actual classes.  This morning we had Perio with a nice professor.  Following that were short speeches from random administrators/professors basically telling us that second year sucks and not to jump off of a bridge.  We had pizza brought in and paid for by the company sponsoring the mandatory insurance (which I hope to opt out of on account of being already insured) and a short presentation.  Then we had Radiology, which was quite the experience.  The professor is a character, and I'm thinking I will really like him.  We were done at 2 pm!

I managed to sneak in a nap after class and then spent time with my GBB (Great BahBoo)... aka my boyfriend.  He gets many nicknames.  This one stems from an older nickname plus the Peanuts comic strip.  We're going to watch an episode of Burn Notice and crash for the evening.

I wanted to post a picture of my back-to-school fingernails, but my camera is driving me INSANE.  Therefore, said picture is disappointing.  GBB and I finally found the Serena Williams set that I've been looking for since early/mid June, so my nails were painted Grape...Set...Match!  with an accent of Servin' Up Sparkle on my ring fingers.  G...S...M! is a great purple.  It's a rich berry-grape base color with a foil finish due to pink/red and blue sparkles.  It was totally worth getting even though I have a pretty large number of purples already.  My cuticles are slightly frowny-face because I started gnawing on them in a fit of Mango-Mendless-induced weakness.  (More on Mango Mend tomorrow...)  I knew that my polishing skills weren't well-showcased with this manicure, especially since I forewent clean-up, but this picture is depressing.  Maybe I shouldn't have painted my nails in bed with dim light the night before my first day as a D2!  =)

I think I'll end with this sobering fact: we learned today that smoking is associated with periodontal disease with an odds ratio of 2.6-6 (ish... I don't have the PowerPoint downloaded yet, so that's from memory).  This is a pretty significant number.  Choose any reason you'd like, but PLEASE consider quitting smoking if you still smoke!

"Brusha brusha brusha, get the new Ipana" love,
